12 Months Before

  • Buy a wedding planner and/or organizer.
  • Talk with your fiancé and parents about the big day: overall theme, budget, dates, possible sites and the guest list.
  • Select the ceremony and reception sites.
  • Choose your attendants.
  • Mail save-the-date cards to ensure your guests have enough notice.
  • Send your engagement announcement to your local newspaper.

10 Months Before

  • Attend Interactive Bridal Showcases to find wedding professionals and services you will need to make your dream day perfect.
  • Visit with your clergy member if you are having a religious ceremony.

8 Months Before

  • Book your caterer, baker, florist musicians, photographer and videographer.
  • Shop around for bridal gowns that fit your style. Order your gown.
  • Begin the guest list. Typically, half the list is allotted to the bride and her family, and the other half is allotted to the groom and his family.
  • Register for gifts at your favorite stores.

6 Months Before

  • Reserve a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. Be sure to offer a luxury hotel as well as an affordable alternative.
  • Shop for your bridesmaids’ dresses.
  • Order wedding stationery such as invitations, response cards, maps, programs, menu cards, table cards and thank-you cards.
  • Research the honeymoon and have a few ideas for the Travel Agent.
  • Book a calligrapher, a limousine company and a portrait photographer.
  • Plan all of the details with all of the wedding professionals and/or the wedding coordinator.

4 Months Before

  • Book your dream honeymoon. Don’t forget about photo ID’s and passports if necessary.
  • Make an appointment for your first dress fitting.
  • Order the wedding bands.
  • Complete the guest list and give all the addresses and contact information to the appropriate wedding professionals.
  • Book your hotel room for the wedding night.
  • Visit the formalwear shop with your fiancé to discuss what type of tuxedos to order for the big day.
  • Schedule the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner.

2 Months Before

  • Mail out the invitations. Check the postage by using one sample invitation at the Post Office.
  • Meet with your officiant to go over the ceremony.
  • Shop for your honeymoon wardrobe and for your lingerie.
  • If you are having your makeup and hair done for the wedding, do a trial to ensure you like the outcome. Also, ask your mother or the maid/matron-of-honor to take a picture as a test.
  • Go for your blood tests; if required by the state.
  • Choose gifts for the attendants.
  • Get name-change forms from the Social Security office, credit card issuers and with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Arrange movers and/or a moving truck to transport your belongings if there is a move involved.

6 Weeks Before

  • Have your final dress fitting.
  • Pick up the wedding bands.
  • Send your announcement to the newspaper(s) of your choice.

2 Weeks Before

  • Pick up your marriage license.
  • Arrange the seating plan for the reception.
  • Speak to your wedding professionals one more time to go over any final details, i.e., music, photos, etc.
  • Write any toasts needed for the dinner rehearsal and the wedding.
  • Confirm your honeymoon reservations with your travel agent.
  • Break in your wedding shoes. Mention this to your fiancé if he is not use to wearing dress shoes for long periods of time.

1 Week Before

  • Give the final head count to your caterer.
  • Pack for your honeymoon.
  • Keep up with thank-you cards.
  • Pick up your dress.
  • Anyone performing readings should be supplied the materials at least one week prior to the wedding.


1 Day Before

  • Treat yourself and your Mom and your Maid/Matron-of-Honor to a manicure and/or a spa treatment. However, be careful of facials. You should give your face a one-week break prior to the wedding.
  • Hold the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner.
  • Try to relax and get a good night’s sleep!

Day of The Wedding

  • Be sure to eat breakfast prior to the wedding.
  • Make sure announcements are in the mail.
  • Enjoy the day! You planned and planned so be sure to enjoy the day with your new husband, family and friends.
